Nordic Tip

Sizing of Ski Poles

Uses:

Selecting a ski pole that fits your height, budget and style. Poles have four components: shaft, basket (at the bottom), grip and strap.

Tip:

  1. Wear your ski gloves when shopping for poles.
  2. For the right length, turn the pole over and grasp the pointed end under the basket in your fist. With the handle of the pole touching the ground, your bent arm should form a perfect right angle.
  3. Talk to a ski shop professional about the latest pole technology in aerodynamics and swing-weight efficiency, if you are interested in aggressive or mogul skiing.

Notes:

If you are a beginner rent poles when you rent your skis and boots. Aluminum poles are sturdy and cost-effective. Graphite or composite poles are lighter, but can break easily and are more expensive.

Warning:

Skiing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
